Goblin Diaries, Vol 34: A Goblin's Dilemma
From the 08/21/26 newsletter:

day of Ice Moon, 1219th Year, Human Age of Magic, evening …
I am so tired. I slept not at all after
hearing Erin’s story last night, and I’ve spent the entire day’s ride, winding
our way through the Darinian Mountains on our way to the Valley of Kilaren,
trying in vain to figure out a way to help her.
So much of Erin’s misery stems from the
belief that some power greater than herself—she calls it Fate—has
pre-determined the course of her life, and that there is nothing she can do to
alter that course. She deserves to know the truth—that the architects of the
prophecy of Ka’il Idreth are just a couple of faeries trying to cause mischief
and that her own Guild of Dream Walkers is using it to further their own
agenda.
And if she knew those truths, I believe
she has both the power and the will to pursue whatever destiny she chooses for
herself.
I’m ashamed to admit that
self-preservation plays a part in my hesitation to share my knowledge. How can
I do so without revealing myself as an agent of the Fae Protectorate? That
would violate protocol and jeopardize the validity of my civil service
requirement.
And
what of my complicity in framing the man she loves with the murder of the
Alchemist in Azurith? Looking back on everything with the perspective of time,
it could be argued that my actions directly precipitated events that led to her
current predicament! I fear Erin could hate me for that, the thought of which I
cannot bear because—Gods of Urgule help this poor goblin—I have developed a
genuine affection for my human companion.
In fact, my time spent traveling with her
has prompted me to re-evaluate my thoughts about her entire species. Perhaps
humans have the evolutionary potential the dragon Pieter claims and should not
be exterminated. If I ever make it back to the offices of the Protectorate,
I’ll certainly offer that conclusion in my report.
Meanwhile, I feel compelled to make some direct and meaningful amends to Erin, my savior and my friend. Gods of Urgule, what should I do?
