Waiting for the Next Book in a Series

Image
I recently had a message from a friend on Goodreads, saying she’d just finished reading the first two books of my Red Wolf Saga and was eager for a third. I love it when a reader becomes drawn into the world I’ve created and wants more, and as a relatively new author, her message definitely made my day. I assured her that the third book, Red Wolf Rising , was now in the editing and beta reader process, and would be available soon. (Check out the teaser for it by clicking on the My Books page tab at the top of my blog.) I allowed myself to bask in the glow of having my work appreciated for a moment, and then I began to reflect on what it’s like for a reader who gets involved in a series that’s not finished yet. Believe me, I’ve been there. I hate it. Maybe it’s because I got spoiled when I first started reading books in a series. As a boy, Edgar Rice Burrough’s Tarzan books, Isaac Asimov’s Foundation Trilogy , and Tolkein’s Lord of the Rings were all finished by the time I got t

Drunk on Mead

I’ve been binging for over a month now. A reading binge, that is. Yes, I know I’m supposed to be finishing up Red Wolf Rising , not reading all the time, and I am, I swear. But all work and no play makes… Wait. Am I about to refer to my writing as work ? Nevermind. Let me explain. Check this out…   “Statistics show that most mortals sell their souls for five reasons: sex, money, power, revenge, and love. In that order. I suppose I should have been reassured, then, that I was out here assisting with numero uno , but the whole situation just made me feel… well, sleazy. And coming from me, that was something.” Thus begins the first chapter in Succubus Blues , and also my love affair with author Richelle Mead. I read those lines a few years back when I was browsing the paranormal/sci-fi section of a Books-a-Million while taking a break from writing The Draculata Nest . I was hooked instantly. Succubus Blues, the first of the Georgina Kincaid series, which covers in six wond

Troll or Park Cover Reveal

Okay, I told you I wasn’t going to be posting much while I approach the deadline for my next novel, and I guess you guys were beginning to believe that since it’s been over a month. But I had to give respite to the silence of the blog and take a short break from working on Red Wolf Rising (I’m getting tantalizingly close to the end!) to share this cool cover for Red Tash’s soon-to-be-released dark fantasy novel… In the spring of 2012, while my editors ripped my first draft of The Dragon of Doughton Park to shreds, I was looking for something to read and stumbled upon Troll or Derby, which I promptly devoured. I was so taken with the cleverly written tale of Roller Deb and Harlow the rock-star troll that I dashed off a quick five-star review and posted it on my blog. (Just so you know, an unsolicited review from me is unusual. I’m a tad on the lazy side when it comes to writing about anything but my own stuff.) It was just that good. A day or so later I was surprised to

Have Mercy!

Another Look at the Mercy Thompson Series by Patricia Briggs  Hey, folks. Happy New Year! I’ve been neglecting the Red Wolf Blog for the last few weeks, and it may be a while before I do another post. I’m really pushing to get Red Wolf Rising ready for editing in the next few months, so blogging has been moved to the back burner of the writing stove, so to speak. However, I just finished reading the seventh book in this wonderful paranormal series, so I thought it might be time to reprise a post I did last year, during my Top Five Paranormal Countdown, but this time include a review of the newest book. Remember? The Mercy Thompson series, by Patricia Briggs, was number four on my top five list for a paranormal series… What I liked… The heroine… The tattooed, kick-ass Volkswagon mechanic named Mercedes is simply to die for, and characters sometimes do. An extraordinary woman engaged in the never-ending struggle to make ends meet, while dealing with any number of e
